The Lost Boys draw True Blood in the Twilight
Drama and fangs and blood, oh my!
The entertainment world has discovered that vampires are hip once again, and two women are responsible for the recent resurgence of interest that has dominated on both the silver screen and TV's across America. First came Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels which were adapted into HBO's Original Series True Blood, coming to life in all its blood-drenched sexual glory as only HBO could have done it. Building on the momentum of True Blood, Stephenie Meyer introduced her Twilight series which became an instant phenomenon, launching Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner into Beatles-like megastardom.
While these two pop culture staples have brought vampires back to the mainstream, it was the 1987 film The Lost Boys that first made being a vampire hip and cool. Directed by Joel Schumaker and filmed in Santa Cruz, California with extensive footage of the legendary Beach Boardwalk as the backdrop (almost a character itself), it followed a gang of teenage vampires in the fictional town Santa Carla. The movie's tagline "Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It's fun to be a vampire" flipped the Dracula image on its head and showed these immortal killers as a bunch of partying kids. Corey Feldman and Corey Haim, later dubbed "The Coreys", found a new level of fame from this movie and Keifer Sutherland's vampire leader role is one of his most memorable.
The Lost Boys, for me, is the movie that changed everything we felt about vampires, making the immortal bloodthirsty lifestyle almost desirable. Of course, the first time I saw it I was quite young and the scenes heavy on gushing blood were viewed through the cracks between my fingers. Twilight has been successful for the love story between Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, and the conflicts between Edward and Bella's longtime friend Jacob Black as they fight for her love. The "southern" aspect of the Sookie Stackhouse storyline gives True Blood an interesting and unique flavor all its own, which helps separate it from Twilight and other vampire shows/movies. However, I think The Lost Boys opened doors and rolled out the red carpet for a new take on vampires and holds its place well among these new franchises.
